What happened to the Australian army nurses on Bangka Island in February 1942?

On 16 February 1942, 22 Australian army nurses from the sunken SS Vyner Brooke surrendered on Radji Beach, Bangka Island. Japanese soldiers ordered them into the sea and machine-gunned them from behind. Sister Vivian Bullwinkel was shot through the side, feigned death, and was the sole survivor. Lynette Silver's investigation revealed they were sexually assaulted prior to being murdered.

Why was the sexual assault on Bangka Island kept secret for decades?

Before testifying at the 1946 Tokyo War Crimes Trials, Sister Vivian Bullwinkel was ordered by Australian military authorities not to speak about the sexual assaults to protect the grieving families from social stigma. She honored this military gag order during her lifetime, confiding only in a trusted friend.

What evidence confirms the nurses were raped before being killed?

Historian Lynette Silver uncovered a forgotten September 1946 Melbourne Sun newspaper report by war correspondent Hal Richardson citing Bullwinkel's statements, corroborated by Repatriation Department archives, Australian Army intelligence records, and sworn testimonies from civilians and medical staff.

Who is the author and researcher behind this Bangka Island investigation?

The historical research and investigative findings are by Australian military historian Lynette Ramsay Silver AM, MBE, published and maintained by author and technology partner kkcsi.com.
